Eight healthy habits fit people swear by
Tis the season for New Year’s resolutions. Losing weight, eating healthier and exercising regularly are some of the most common resolutions. Unfortunately, by March, most people have abandoned their “fresh start” and resolve back into their old patterns. They say it takes 21 days to form a habit so we are sharing eight healthy habits that fit people do every day, that if you aren’t doing already, can help you feel great and have a tremendous effect on your health.
- Drink more water than you think possible. Staying hydrated has many benefits for your skin, eyes, body, etc., but drinking water throughout the day removes bloat and helps you feel full longer. Grab that bottle and get chugging!
- Wear a fitness tracker. Not only does this help keep track of your activity and goals and tells you a lot of health data you may otherwise not know, but it’s also fun to compete with friends and family.
- Get moving. Staying active during the day doesn’t have to be difficult. Take the dog for an extra walk, park further away from the store or office or just get up more often if your job requires sitting for long periods. Even standing and stretching breaks are beneficial for your health.
- Eat less-processed, whole foods. This one is difficult for people for various reasons. Even little changes make a big difference. Try and up your portions of clean, whole, plant-based food and reduce processed foods.
- Limit alcohol. This one is a no-brainer. Cutting out booze means less excess sugar and calories that are consumed with wine, beer and spirits. Alcohol also contributes to bloating and if hungover, may result in poor food choices and less activity.
- Exercise regularly. The CDC recommends for adults 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days devoted to strength training activities. Join Board30 PV, go for a walk or run, do yoga, etc. Social media channels are full of free videos you can do anytime, anywhere.
- Stretch. Many people exercise but skip the stretching part, which is important to keep the muscles flexible, strong and healthy. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Be sure to stretch before and after a workout for optimal benefits.
- Hit the sack early. Everyone knows a good night’s rest is important to your health. Did you know that people who go to bed early tend to worry less, are more productive and have an easier time maintaining a healthy weight? Research shows short sleep duration appears to be associated with weight gain.
Incorporating one or all of these fitness habits in your lives could help you keep your resolutions longer and eventually transform your health and wellness.
